Altered Images Project

I chose my own photos for my specific altered images project. The three photos that I chose were not previously edited on photoshop prior. I started the project by downloading my photos onto an untitled file and exporting them onto my photoshop application. Once each of the photos were added onto the application, I made sure each of the photos had a resolution of 150 pixels per inch. I edited each of the photos separately. I first changed the brightness to -5 on the first photo, seen on the left of my project. I also applied a warming filter (85) to the first photo as well. Next, I added a 5% shadow and an RGB color mode onto the middle photo of my project. For the third image, on the right, I sharpened the edges.

After I finished editing the images, I inserted them all onto one platform. I had to resize the photos by clicking on the edit button, then on the transform button, and finally the scale button. I reserved a fourth layer on the bottom to create a frame. I chose to make my frame white in order to color coordinate all of the photos in my project. I made sure my photos were separated in 1.540 inches of negative space horizontally. My last step for the project was to save it as a psd. document since I included layers within my project.

Selections and Masking Project

For this in-class assignment, I learned how to select and mask different images on Photoshop to create a composition. I did so by using lasso tools and the pen tool. I also added clouds by masking them onto my background and using the brush tool to fit them evenly behind the grass. Other features I included were shadows and filling. In order to make the flower look more proportional, I duplicated a layer behind it to create a shadow. I did this also for the beach ball and sea shell and added a blur to make a lighter shadow. I also filled the two shells with sand by using the lasso tool and the fill feature.

Photoshop Compositions Project

For this assignment, I had to create a composition using different images. On the photo seen on the left, I was required to to focus on scale, hierarchy, and balance, while on the left I focused on hue and creating a composition that says something about myself.

To start off my work, I chose photos that depicted the nature of outer space. I chose to make my theme outer space because I have always been interested in learning about the solar system. Before masking and pasting my photos, I made sure each of my photos had a dimension of 12 X 12, a resolution of 150 ppi, and a color mode of RGB. I selected and masked my photos by using the magnetic lasso tool, the magic wand, the pen tool, and the brush tool.

My original photo of the earth and the moon did not include the galaxy background, so I therefore overlapped a layer of the photo to create it. I later selected and masked the people and other items onto my background to create my first composition.

I mainly followed the same steps to create the second composition. However, I made sure each photo was the same hue and depicted more of a visionary story. I chose to use a hue of -10 because I was working with mainly green and blue images. I included my own picture of the girl outlooking the people on the grass and the space backround to make the composition come from her perspective. I added a few more asteroids by duplicating the its layer, and I added the grass by making a new layer and using the brush tool to replace the moon backround.

Non-Destructive Selections and Masking Project

For this assignment, I was required to create a composition using non-destructive methods. I used five different images to create a piece that follows a seasonal theme. Before I started creating my winter themed composition, I made sure each of my photos, including the canvas, were all the same size and resolution. My piece is 12X12 inches, has a resolution of 150 pixels per inch, and a color mode of RGB.

Instead of simply selecting and masking images onto one background, I layered each photo and used layer masks. The addition of the layer masks allowed me to take out parts of the images that I did not need. For example, the photo of my moon included a scenery that did not match the rest of my composition, so I used my brush to paint over the parts I did not want. For the aurora and constellations, I used the same brush but included a feather feature to blend it in with the light of the night sky. My mountain town was the primary perspective of this composition, so I included the picture of the girl looking outside of the window to exhibit that. To make sure my mountain blended in well with my sky, I created a whole other layer to edit the surrounding edges by painting a turquoise line around the mountains and changing its opacity to correlate with the sky. For my final edit, I contrasted the brightness of the picture of the girl and my mountain scenery by decreasing its contrast.

Retouching Images Project

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is gobeil_retouchinga-1.jpg
This photo was taken by Glenna Gobeil

Because this photo was taken on a film camera, there were certain imperfections that could have been edited to improve the photo. For this assignment, I retouched the original photo by adding a blur feature as well as increasing the level of the white on the photo. I also tried using the spot healing brush to clear out marks of the photo I did not want. My photos have a reolution of 150 ppi and a color mode of RGB.

In addition to my own composition, I edited photos that were given to me in class. On the left is the original photo, and on the right is the photo I retouched. I applied an auto tone, an auto contrast, and an auto image to improve the dog photo. I also used a non-destructive method to change the color of the grass. I also applied a pattern on the frame of my photo. The photos have a resolution of 150 ppi and a color mode of RGB.

For this assignment, I retouched the photo by filling in the edges. I used the lasso tool to select the areas that needed to be filled and I filled the rest to be content aware. I changed the coloring of the photo by changing the levels of the trees and the couple. Also, I changed the brightness to be lighter. The photos have a resolution of 150 ppi and a color mode of RGB.

In- Class Pencil Assignment

Note: This photo is a screenshot of my original composition

For this assignment, I worked in Adobe Illustrator to create a composition. My composition displays three pencils side by side. To create my pencil, I used given measurements to create shapes that would make up my utensil. I started off the assignment by creating the eraser and softening the edges of the rectangle. The measurements for the eraser are 36 pt by 36 pt and 46 pt by 10 pt. To create the pencil, I created two triangles and aligned the boxes together. The measurements for the two triangles are 36 pt by 360 pt and 18 pt by 360 pt. To create the pencil point, I used three shapes: triangle, square, and oval. I used the anchor point tool to create the edges of the top of the pencil point to make my illustration look more realistic. To decorate the pencil, I filled it in with different colors. I also applied a gradient fill to my eraser.

First Major Project

For this first major project, I initially was going to create a poster about suicide and its preventions. However, I chose to cover a topic that applies to suicide and one of its major causes. Cyberbullying is a major cause of suicide and until I started researching more about its preventions, I didn’t really know that there were many resources that looked into the social aspect of cyberbullying and what is being done to further eliminate it. Though my poster does not demonstrate the major causes of cyberbullying, it displays what the act entails and a resource where viewers can reference to if they were interested in researching further. The slogan of my poster is “Bullying is Bullying. On and off the screen”. In my poster, the person on the top left is illustrated saying hurtful words while the same words are displayed on the background of my poster. The point I was trying to convey with this assignment is that texting those words to someone is the same as saying them in person. The person on the right is illustrated as the victim.

To create my assignment, I started sketching out my ideas on a piece of paper. I knew that I wanted to use shadows as the people in my poster because I want everyone to feel applicable to what my message conveys despite race or gender. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with the rest of my poster at this point of the process, however, I figured that having a text message visible in some part of my poster would be necessary. I created the text message by using my Iphone and simply taking a picture of the message. I filled in the information regarding information of the cyberbullying website, in the blue message box at the bottom of my poster.

On Photoshop, I started off creating a background of my composition by using a blank 11 inch by 17 inch poster. I then opened the photos I wanted to use for my project onto Photoshop and made sure each photo had a resolution of 150 pixels per inch and a color mode of RGB. I then inserted my text message onto the background and later added the faces onto the sides of the canvas. I applied layer masks onto both faces to apply different gradient colors onto the faces. I typed my slogan onto the bottom of my poster and changed the coloring of the font from black to red. I also provided a link to the cyberbullying resource within the message of my poster. To get the blue message icon onto my poster, I selected and masked it onto my background and later altered the sizing of it. I created a vertical arch on the top left near the shadow and wrote the words reflected in the text message. I changed the opacity of the arched words to lighten its visibility. I used 11 layers in total to create my final project poster.

In-Class Assignment Illustrator- Elephant

For this assignment, I worked in Adobe Illustrator to work with color gradients and tones in order to illustrate the elephant. To start ,I chose the colors that I wanted to use for my design. For some aspects of the elephant, I decided to include gradient features to inhance the features of the elephant’s body that would reflect onto the light. I later added the grass onto the photo by simply implementing the grass feature onto the bottom of the canvas.

In- Class Assignment- Pear

For this in-class assignment, I worked on Adobe Illustrator to create a pear. In order to create the formation, I used the pen tool to connect the points. Prior to making the pear, I worked on creating curves and edges which was prominent to understanding how to make its structure. Once I finished, the shape, I later made the leaves and made the three structures one shape my merging them together. I added a gradient feature to the pear and used green tones for the leaves. The final step of the project was inserting a shadow feature behind the figure.

Grids & Colors

For this assignment, I was required to make a grid with patterns and shapes in Adobe Illustrator. To start off this assignment, I created a 6 X 6 square grid. I inserted shapes within the squares to create a pattern. To make the shapes, I used the shape tool and inserted them into the boxes. Once I finished making my designs, I filled in my shapes with colors and gradients. I tried to use a green, red, orange, yellow, and blue theme to follow my pattern. To complete the first step of this project, I unlocked the layer in which I inserted my shapes onto, in order to color the squares. I followed the same color theme for the squares as well.

For the next step of this project, I began working on a vertical canvas to 36 X 36 square grid. I copied the first grid onto the new canvas and reflected it by 90 degrees horizontally. Once I aligned my horizontal grids, I reflected its pattern by 0 degrees vertically.

In-Design Poster

For this assignment, I worked on Adobe In-Design to create a poster. The dimensions of the poster are 8.5 inches by 11 inches letter style. I created three layers to work on within this assignment. I added two rectangles onto the background layer of my poster. I made block on the left a magenta color while the one on the right is just a lighter version. I then inserted the logos I downloaded on my course materials folder and centered them onto the page. I went to my links tab to edit the color and text of the labels within Adobe Illustrator. I then began to work on my text layer and wrote the phrase ‘Design Creative Posters Using Design Thinking.’ I centered the phrase and increased the letter space to insert it onto my poster. I changed the font color to match the poster as well.

Turtle Assignment

For this assignment, I created two article templates on Adobe In-Design. The first step to the first template of my project was to download and create seperate folders for images and text. Once this step was finished, I inserted the photos onto my vertical canvas. I also inserted three columns on the canvas to insert my text. To insert my documents, I clicked on the window tab and then on the place button. I inserted the article content onto my three columns and later italicized and capitalized the appropriate parts of the text. I included the ocean picture to the back of my text and changed the opacity of the photo as well as a feather feature to my text. Once all my photos and text were formatted correctly, I put the photos onto my document. I put a text-wrap feature onto my one turtle photo to make sure that it blended in with my text.

For the next poster design I used the same steps as my first poster but changed the font and formatting of my document. I used the text-wrap feature on two pictures of my turtle. An important detail of successfully completing this assignment was also making sure that I inserted the media content onto the three different layers of my poster.

Second Major Project

I chose to create an infographic on the Green New Deal for my second major project. I referred to Vox’s video of the “Green New Deal Explained.” For this assignment, I worked on Adobe Illustrator to create my poster. I made the orientation of my canvas a vertical letter with a mint green background. I started off my infographic by explaining the initiative behind the Green New Deal and made a chart that references back to the Vox video. To make the chart, I worked on a separate document and used the rectangle and line tool to create the components. I then grouped my shapes together to make sure they all connected together before pasting it onto my infographic document. I used similar features to create the other graphics of my poster such as the American flag, the stop sign, the money sign, the windmill, and the people under the ‘Two Parts of the Green New Deal’ section. However, I did use the pen tool to make the people’s bodies and the grass on the windmill illustration. To make parts of my information more defiant, I increased the stroke and size of the text. I also included two embedded pictures of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ed Markey. To finish off my assignment, I made sure to include the link of the source I got my information from.
